Yo también soy un Fanboy!!

Segundo PoSoL liberado
A tiempo para fin de año liberamos el segundo episodio del Podcast Software Libre Nicaragua, el POSOL, hecho con maíz 100% GPL.
En este episodio, titulado ‘La Llamarada’, podrán enterarse un poco sobre lo que está haciendo la comunidad nica, además de una entrevista a Cecilia Ferrer, cantautora nicaragüense que está liberando su primer álbum bajo una licencia Creative Commons.
Minutos más tarde corre la sangre en el estudio cuando discutimos acerca de cómo se dice: ¿Linux o GNU/Linux? En la aplicación de la semana hablamos sobre las carácteristicas de Lernid, una plataforma para talleres en línea.
Finalizamos recomendando algunos sitios web de interés y lanzamos el primer concurso posolero.

Karmic Release Parties Nicaragua
The Ubuntu Nicaragua LoCo Team celebrated the release of Ubuntu Karmic Koala with two events in capital city Managua.
The fiesta kicked off on November 12, with a series of conferences in the Central American University (UCA).
I gave my usual talk about how to get involved and contribute with the community. Second on line was benevolent dictator Adolfo «K» Fitoria, who showed us the latest news on Kubuntu 9.10, followed by the Gnome fan-boy José Ernesto Dávila with all the goodies in Ubuntu 9.10, including a great presentation of gnome shell. The multimedia guru Rodrigo «RoRo» Rodríguez introduced us to video and audio editing in Ubuntu and last, but not least, daredevil Marcelo Gutierrez showed us the awesomeness of Xubuntu. 9.10.
It was a cool event, lots of new faces and many people interested in getting involved with the community. After the event, the party continued with some cold beers at a local bar.
The following week, on November 20, the Ubuntu Ninjas crashed the Pizza Bash 11 event at the Mansión Teodolinda hotel.
We had a lot of fun (well… not me, I got to work :(). There was some BoF sessions, including one about GPG keys and the atendees got the opportunity to test drive Karmic.
And after the event… yes, you guessed it! More beers!!

Second day at the ECSL
Today is the second day at the Central American Free Software Summit in Estelí, Nicaragua.
We had some interesting working groups covering topics such as Free Software in Education, Free Software in Government, Licenses and Copyleft, and Free Software and Gender. Every work group is going to present their recommendations and some joint initiatives and projects for the Central American communities.
There were also some workshops at the ECSL; Drupal, Mono, Asterisk, Sugar, Django and best practices in programming. Also, a lot of discussions and informal meetings took place in the afternoon and several social activities are programmed for tonight.
So far, it has been an amazing experience. It’s great to get to know better our old (and new) friends from Central America and share and learn from all the experiences working with the local communities.

La comunidad que todos queremos
Los recién iniciados en esto del software libre se sorprenden al ver una comunidad organizada con su propia cultura, normas y códigos de conducta. Para ellos es díficil concebir una comunidad entusiasta de activistas alrededor de una aplicación de software.
El problema radica en que miran al software libre desde una óptica meramente tecnológica.
Esto no pasa solamente en el exterior, también dentro de nuestra comunidad hay grupos e individuos que solo les interesa la parte tecnológica y que se enfocan exclusivamente en promover el uso de las aplicaciones que ellos usan y poco les importa la ética y filosofía del software libre.
Desgraciadamente es este tipo de gente que prevalece hoy en día en nuestra comunidad; gente apática, egoista, e ignorantes de las dimensiones éticas, políticas y sociales del movimiento de software libre.
¿Qué se debe hacer para enderezar el rumbo?
Sinceramente, no lo sé… Lo único que sé es que el futuro de la comunidad nicaragüense no es tan brillante a como se vislumbraba un par de años atrás.
United we are strong
The Ubuntu Translation Sprint was meant to conclude four hours ago, but we’re still here translating.
It has been a very productive day, we’ve translated +700 strings in Rosetta, but the best thing about todays event was that we had members from the other Linux communities in Nicaragua (Fedora, openSuse and Debian) translating Ubuntu packages.
This is a perfect example on how people with different backgrounds and interests can contribute and work together in harmony for the benefit of the whole FOSS community.
I was particularly amused by seeing Neville, a Fedora guy, translating Ubuntu packages on a Debian box. Priceless!

Document Freedom Day 08
The first Document Freedom Day ever was a huge success. Talks and conferences, a pretty cool demo area, leaflets, CDs, t-shirts and a lot of LoCo fun!! You can take a look at our team report and some photos here:
