The 13th Debian Conference is just around the corner. DebConf12 will be held in Managua, Nicaragua, July 8-14, 2012, and we need your help!
Why should I care?
DebConf is the annual conference for Debian contributors and interested users. Previous Debian Conferences have featured speakers and attendees from around the world (DebConf11 had attendees from 46 different countries).
DebConf helps share the knowledge and experiences of individual developers with the entire community. It also helps promote enthusiasm for specialized areas of development and encourages discussions about Debian’s future.
The benefits that DebConf brings to the Debian project as a whole, and the larger Free Software community, will improve Debian —and by extension will help improve GNU/Linux for everyone, whether they use Debian (or a Debian derivative), or any other distribution.
How can I help?
DebConf is a lot to organize and pay for. We invite you to help that this is going to be a successfull event.

I’m the team leader of the local DebConf12 team and I’ll try to keep you updated on all the cool things that are going on right now with the organization of the thirteenth Debian developer conference that will take place in Managua, Nicaragua, from 1st to 14th of July 2012.

The Debian Project, the team behind the free Debian operating system, has confirmed the dates and venue for its next annual conference, DebConf12.
The conference will take place from July 8 to July 14 2012, in Managua, Nicaragua. In DebConf’s twelve-year history, this will be the first time it will be held in Central America.
Every year, DebConf allows new and existing Debian project participants from around the world to assemble, share knowledge, make collaborative contributions to Debian, and build tighter community bonds. Conference costs are largely funded by corporate sponsors who find significant value in enabling Debian’s success.
The members of the Debian community in Nicaragua, working together with their fellow communities in Central America, are very excited to be hosting this event, and are happy to welcome our colleagues from around the world to join us in Managua at this very important and productive conference

This conference will boost the local Debian and Free Software communities and help to bring awareness for the Debian Project, with new contributors and enthusiasts from our country and the surrounding region joining the Debian community and helping Debian to build the best operating system.
DebConf will be preceded by a day when it opens its doors to the general public, commonly called Debian Day. There will be talks and demonstrations about the benefits of Debian and Free and Open Source software in general to corporate, governmental, academic, and individual users.
The call for papers and registration will open in early 2012.
DebConf12 will be preceded by DebCamp, the yearly developer work sessions, starting on July 1.

El 22 de marzo de 2011, el comité de la DebConf decidió que la DebConf12, la conferencia anual de desarrolladores de Debian en el 2012, se lleve a cabo en la ciudad de Managua en Nicaragua, siendo esta la primera DebConf que se celebrará en Centroamérica. La fecha exacta está aún por decidir. Más detalles al respecto en el wiki de organización.
Tras una reunión de dos horas y media el pasado martes, la propuesta de Managua obtuvo la victoria por un estrecho margen sobre la propuesta de Belo Horizonte, Brasil. Ambos equipos han estado preparando sus propuestas desde mediados del 2010 en busca de lugares y patrocinadores en sus respectivas ciudades.
En trece años de historia de la DebConf, esta será la primera vez que la conferencia de desarrolladores de Debian tenga lugar en la región centroamericana, además de ser también la primera vez que el equipo de la DebConf recibe una propuesta de un país centroamericano. Ambos equipos hicieron un gran trabajo en sus propuestas.
El comité de la DebConf felicitó a los futuros organizadores de la DebConf12, y agradeció a ambos equipos por sus esfuerzos.
La sede para la DebConf13 se decidirá en 12 meses. Las propuestas se deben enviar antes del 31 de diciembre de 2011 para ser consideradas.
La DebConf es la conferencia de desarrolladores del proyecto Debian. Además de un programa lleno de charlas técnicas, sociales y políticas, la DebConf le brinda la oportunidad a los desarrolladores, colaboradores y otras personas interesadas, de conocerse en persona y trabajar juntos más estrechamente. Se ha celebrado anualmente desde el año 2000 en lugares tan diversos como España, Argentina, y los Estados Unidos.
Este año, la DebConf11 dará inicio el domingo 24 de julio, y terminará el sábado 13 de julio. La conferencia tendrá lugar en Banja Luka, Bosnia y Herzegovina.
La DebConf será precedida por el DebCamp, desde el domingo 17 de Julio, y hasta el sábado 23 de julio de 2011. DebCamp es un evento pequeño y menos formal que brinda la oportunidad de trabajar a los diversos grupos de Debian.
El domingo 24 de julio de 2011 se llevará a cabo el «Open Day» de la DebConf, el cual es un día enfocado a conferencias para usuarios de Debian, así como cualquier persona interesada en aprender más acerca del software libre.

El proyecto Debian fué fundado en 1993 por Ian Murdock para ser un proyecto de la comunidad verdaderamente libre. Desde entonces el proyecto ha crecido hasta ser uno de los proyectos más grandes e importantes de software libre. Miles de voluntarios en todo el mundo trabajan juntos para crear y mantener programas para Debian. Se encuentra traducido en 70 idiomas y soporta una gran cantidad de arquitecturas de computadoras, por lo que el proyecto se refiere a si mismo como «el sistema operativo universal».
