PU: Your daily dose of free knowledge

On Sunday, at the awesome #mrpni, I presented our new and shiny project; the Píldoras Ubunteras or PU, a collection of Ubuntu screencasts made for and by the community.

So, what are the PU exactly?

• Simple and straightforward – Short screencasts (less than 3 minutes long) about using Ubuntu and common applications
• Localization – All the screencasts will be available in Spanish, English and Miskito (language spoken by the Miskito people in northeastern Nicaragua and in eastern Honduras)
• Accessibility – All the screencasts will have subtitles available for download
• Freedom – All the screencasts are made with free software, distributed under a free license and in open formats

Want to contribute?

• We need screencasters! In English, in Spanish or in Miskito. About Ubuntu or any derivative or about how to use one of the thousands applications available in Ubuntu or any cool feature you discovered. Just remember to keep it short and simple!
• We need translators! Do you speak English? Hablas español? Man nani Miskitu aisisma ki? You can help us translate the screencasts or making the subtitles.

• If you want to upload a screencast, just ask for access to the server

Se viene el Narval Elegante

Como ya es costumbre, Mark anunció el día de hoy el nombre código de la próxima versión de desarrollo de Ubuntu (11.04), la cual se llamará Natty Narwhal, o Narval Elegante.

El Narval es una especie de cetáceo que habita en los mares árticos. Una de las carácteristicas distintivas de este animal es su gran colmillo, que lo asemeja a una especie de unicornio marino, y que puede medir hasta 3 metros.

Ubuntu User Day in Spanish is ON!!

Este sábado 5 de junio inician las actividades del Día del Usuario Ubuntu. Estaremos desde las 9:45 hasta las 19:00 (hora centroamericana) en el canal #ubuntu-charlas de Freenode con un total de 10 charlas sobre Ubuntu y software libre. Para más detalles, consultar la wiki oficial del evento.

New Community Council

The Ubuntu Nicaragua LoCo Team elected a new Community Council for the 2010-2011 period. José Ernesto Dávila, one of the founders of the team and responsible for the Semana Ubuntera, is the new Team Leader. Marcelo Gutierrez, the leader of the FLISOL Nicaragua 2010 team, was appointed as the Team Contact.

The new members of the Nicaraguan Community Council are:

• Camilo Quintana
• Leandro Gómez

Día del Usuario Ubuntu

El Día del Usuario Ubuntu está a la vuelta de la esquina. Este próximo 5 de junio nos reuniremos en #ubuntu-charlas y #ubuntu-charlas-chat de irc.freenode.net para celebrar la segunda edición de este evento.

El Día del Usuario Ubuntu es un conjunto de charlas que se van a dar en el correr de un día para que los nuevos usuarios de Ubuntu, con conocimientos básicos e intermedios puedan aprender cosas como:

• Como instalar Ubuntu
• Encontrar programas equivalentes en Ubuntu
• Cómo obtener ayuda
• Aprender cosas básicas para utilizar Ubuntu
• Aprender como integrarse y colaborar con la comunidad

Microsoft Installfest?

I felt a bit like in the Twilight Zone this morning when several friends from the community tipped me off that the Central American University (UCA) in Managua had put together a Microsoft Student Club and were about to organize their very first event at the university campus: Microsoft Installfest 2010.

It’s quite funny to see how they’re trying to copy the LUG formula with formal community structures and events.

Sad thing is that UCA was one of the leading universities in Nicaragua in terms of FOSS adoption and embracement of free knowledge and open content.

Anyway, I think this is a great opportunity for the local university LUG to show their muscle and try to hinder the Microsoft invasion.
