Jalapa is a municipality in the Nueva Segovia Department of Nicaragua, which is located on the border of Honduras.
Jalapa is a very poor region and was one of the most affected by the civil war in the 80’s.
Today, the local government of Jalapa is making a strong bet on the future, migrating their workstations and servers to Free and Open Source Software, specifically Ubuntu Linux.
It’s an unique opportunity to narrow the digital divide and bring progress to the rural communities. A big ‘Thank You’ to the members of our LoCo Team that has been working hard for several months to make this initiative come true.

The Ubuntu Translation Sprint was meant to conclude four hours ago, but we’re still here translating.
It has been a very productive day, we’ve translated +700 strings in Rosetta, but the best thing about todays event was that we had members from the other Linux communities in Nicaragua (Fedora, openSuse and Debian) translating Ubuntu packages.
This is a perfect example on how people with different backgrounds and interests can contribute and work together in harmony for the benefit of the whole FOSS community.
I was particularly amused by seeing Neville, a Fedora guy, translating Ubuntu packages on a Debian box. Priceless!
Thank you all! See you in the next Translation Sprint!

Do you speak Spanish? Do you want to contribute back to this awesome community? Great! Read the guidelines and join us this Friday 13th (15:00-22:00 UTC) in #ubuntu-ni at irc.freenode.net for the Ubuntu Translation Sprint.
Oh… you don’t speak Spanish? No worries! You can join us anyway and meet some of the cool guys from the Spanish speaking community, have a beer with us and translate into your favorite language.

Today, the Ubuntu El Salvador team got approved as an official team. This is one step forward towards our goal of an approved team in every Central American country by 2008.
Congrats to all the Guanacos! [1] Greetings goes also to the Ubuntu Ecuador and Ubuntu Perú teams that got approved today as well. Latino power!!
[1] Guanaco (Salvadoran slang), an informal demonym that Salvadorans use to refer to themselves.

It’s going to be a pretty busy month for our FOSS community. Lots of activities and events to keep track of.
June 4-5: FERTEC – The National Autonomous University Technological Fair. We’re going to have a stand there and give a couple of talks.
June 5: Jornadas Ubunteras – The local Ubuntu community in the Central American University (UCA) is going to present a documentary titled “Linux Code”.
June 6: II Almidón Workshop for Developers – The local GNU/Linux community, in partnership with Guegue and ISI, are organizing a second workshop for Almidón developers. Almidón is a popular CMS released under a GPLv3 license. It’s used in over 200 web sites, including El Nuevo Diario, SIMAS, and many other.
June 6: SFD Planning – After the Almidón workshop, we’re going to have a meeting in order to plan for the Software Freedom Day 2008.
June 8: Ubuntu-ni meeting – The Ubuntu-ni Community Council is having its first meeting of the month.
June 12: The local Ubuntu community in the Central American University (UCA) strikes back! This time we’re having an introductory conference about Contributing to Ubuntu.
June 13: Ubuntu Translation Sprint – Our very first translation sprint on Friday 13th. There’s no place for bad luck here.
June 14: Mandriva Install Party – The youngest community in .ni are organizing their first event. We’re going to give them a hand with some FOSS related conferences.
June 15: UNI LAN Party – We’ve been invited to this event by a local gamers community. Time to play some FoF, Urban Terror and (my favorite) Frozen Bubble!!
June 20: openSuse Day/Linux Tour – The members of the local open Suse community are invading the campus of UNICIT for a day long event.
Not scheduled yet: Our third Strategic Planning Workshop + a couple of birthdays (yes, we party too!!).
Rest? Who has time for that?
BTW: Good luck El Salvador, Perú and Ecuador on your approval today!
