Web standards: LoCos and politics, Round 1

Last week, the Ubuntu-ni LoCo Team and three other local LUGs issued a public statement advocating the discussion and approval of an official guideline for a minimum level of accessibility for all Government websites. The debate started on a local mailing list in the spotlight of the inability to access some public websites using the Firefox browser, specifically the website of the General Comptroller of the Republic.

Local bloggers and Internet news sites spread the word and the story made it into the newspapers and onto the TV (it was even broadcasted in the US by the Telemundo Network).

A few days later, the website of the General Comptroller of the Republic was available for all Mozilla Firefox users for very the first time in what consitutes a small but significant triumph for the local FOSS community.

This is what happens when you have a strong and dedicated community willing to stand up for their rights :)
